Henk Vos

Henk Vos
Like his sons Roderick and Bart, Henk Vos (1939) is a very talented Dutch designer. When his father Wiebe Vos suddenly died in 1963, 23 year old Henk took over his furniture and upholstery factory in Groningen, in the North of the Netherlands. Henk Vos turned it into a very succesful interior shop and completed many interior design projects.

In 1996, together with his sons Roderick and Bart, and with Roderick’s wife Claire, he opened the leading interior design shopping plaza Maupertuus in Groningen, now Vos Interieur. The impressive building was designed by son Bart. Henk Vos’ design motto: ‘rather empty than ugly’. Table VNU, his first design in the LINTELOO collection, has been copied numerous times and is still produced by LINTELOO today. ‘I originally designed the now classic table VNU for the publishing company VNU, a predecessor of Sanoma NL. They wanted a universal table that could be used in all offices of the company. Jan spotted my design and decided to put it in his first collection. He has a radar, or nose if you like, for good furniture. He immediately knows if something is good or not, and will tell you so. He does so with all designers he works with and that is how his collection comes together. I used to have a lot of my furniture made in Indonesia, the country where my wife was born and where we used to have a house. At the time there was a man called Aulia, who had a wood factory and did terrible things: he bought beautiful, old trees to make massive teak furniture. By designing coffee table Aulia, I taught him how you can make a robust table without much waste, by putting together strips of different kinds of wood and keeping the center hollow. The Aulia, available in many sizes, looks very heavy, but is actually very lightweight and easy to lift to another spot. Jan recognised the potential of this design, which also turned out to be very succesful.’
