French designer born in 1944.
At twenty years old Gilles Derain is a broker of masterpieces then is formed with the design by the secondhand trade. He quickly becomes a specialist in the history of decorative arts and was among the first to discover the creators of the Union of the Modern Artists (UAM).
Gilles Derain was the precursor of the syndrome “epoxy sheet black” which was essential in the middle of the Eighties as a symptom of japan modernity. His lamp MPC (Merci Pierre Chareau) in 1979 was an enormous commercial success and is included in the collection of the museum of decorative arts of Montreal.
Derain creates lamps, pieces of furniture, carpets, jewels. In 1985, he creates furniture for Pentalux and the Balla table in chromed steel in memory to Giacomo Balla (1871-1958) who was the master of the Italian futuristic movement
